3. Advanced Finite Element Methods for Continuum Mechanics

Document Actions
Organizers: Giorgio Fotia (CRS4/TCN Consortium) and Anna Pandolfi (Politecnico di Milano). This course focuses on the finite element method applied to non-linear problems, illustrates classical and innovative solution procedures, and points out the issues related to the implementation of numerical algorithms. In particular, various topics of discretization techniques for non-linear analysis are introduced, including: finite kinematics, solution approaches (Total Lagrangian, Update Lagrangian), constitutive models (linear and nonlinear elasticity, rate-independent plasticity, viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity), variational formulations for non linear problems, fracture and adaptive meshing techniques, and frictionless and frictional contact problems.
