Event 03: Advanced Finite Element Methods for Continuum Mechanics
Consorzio TCN, Padova, Italy,
2006-04-05 14:00:00 -
2006-04-07 18:00:00

This compact course focused on the finite element method applied to non-linear problems, illustrated classical and innovative solution procedures, and pointed out the issues related to the implementation of numerical algorithms. Various topics of discretization techniques for non-linear analysis has been introduced, including: finite kinematics, solution approaches (Total Lagrangian, Update Lagrangian), constitutive models (linear and nonlinear elasticity, rate-independent plasticity, viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity), variational formulations for non linear problems, fracture and adaptive meshing techniques, frictionless and frictional contact problems. The lectures of this course will be soon available online at: http://www.eua4x.net/e-atelier/virtualschool

Aeroacoustics is a fast evolving subject, implied in fields as various as transport (airplane and road vehicles) or safety (noise in working environment, vibration-induced mechanical fatigue) for example. This course is aimed at providing a state of the art in noise prediction, in a form accessible to both researchers and industrial attendees. The emphasis will be put on recent theoretical and numerical developments, characterized by different levels of approximation:
1. direct methods for CAA based on Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS), Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES);
2. URANS solution of the Navier-Stokes equations;
3. Hybrid methods based on CFD for sound production combined with linearized methods for far field sound radiation (Lighthill and Ffowcs-Williams analogies, Kirchhoff integral method, ...).
These methods will be applied to test cases (like jet noise, rotor noise, ...), and compared with experimental results. The test cases considered are chosen to illustrate the abilities of the different approaches, allowing an evaluation of their performances and applicability, but without being restricted to any particular field. Therefore, the main objective of this course is to allow a large transfer between world scientists, leaders in the aeroacoustics field, and demanding industry and laboratories in research centers and universities.
