CRS4, Center for Advanced Studies, Research and Development in Sardinia, is a not-for-profit consortium of public and private companies. The shareholders are Consorzio Ventuno (as delegate for theRegion of Sardinia), IBM-Italia, STMicroelecronics, the University of Cagliari, the University of Sassari, SARAS S.p.A. and Tiscali S.p.A. Founded in 1990 and beginning operations in 1991, CRS4 is today the principal point of reference for Polaris for research and development activities based on information technology, computer networking and high performance computing. CRS4's research activities are concentrated on the development of enabling technologies in physical modelling, mathematical modelling and computer science in high priority areas recognized as strategic at the regional, national and European levels. The principal applications are in the sectors of energy, environmental science, life sciences and the information society. The activities of CRS4 are carried out by a group of about eighty researchers and technicians, sited at the Scientific Park at Pula.

CRS4 areas of expertise encompass large-scale computational problems requiring advanced simulation techniques supported by High Performance Computing, along with the timely integration of newly emerging Information and Communications Technology. Our areas of interest include computational fluid dynamics, combustion and chemical processes, geophysics, environment, structural analysis, elastic and electromagnetic wave propagation, biomathematics, telemedicine, as well as visualization and virtual reality. Our aims are the development and analysis of appropriate mathematical models, their numerical solution by advanced algorithms and innovative software tools for programming and visualization as well as the validation and assessment of results based on benchmark problems. CRS4 contributes to the creation of new positions for young scientific and technical graduates, helping them to actively participate in a stimulating international applied research environment. People working at CRS4 will have the opportunity to acquire essential skills and to master some of the most advanced research and technology techniques. The areas mostly related to the present project are: (i) Geographical Information Area; (ii) Systems Hydrology and Water Resources Management Area; (iii) Energy and Chemical Processes Department. Other departments will be involved, too. The research target of the Energy and Chemical Processes Department is the development of models and simulation techniques for materials, devices and processes mainly related to the clean energy field. The methods and techniques used range from microscopic approaches (statistical mechanics and simulation techniques for soft condensed matter, Monte Carlo techniques) to more wide scale view points (transport in porous media, kinetic mechanism of combustion reactions, sensitivity analysis, electrochemical process simulations). The Geographical Information Area in mainly focused on: (i) development of applications to study spatial relationships between data deriving from heterogeneous sources; (ii) experimentation of coupling GIS technologies with environmental models; (iii) application of models using directly GIS technologies to estimate area being of environmental risk. The activities of the Systems Hydrology and Water Resources Management Area are centered on the development and application of numerical models and other computational tools for the analysis of environmental data and for the simulation of the dynamics of hydrological and meteorological state variables. These tools help us to improve our understanding of fundamental hydrometeorological phenomena and to better manage our precious water resources.
