The CIMNE (International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering) is one of the first autonomous research and development centers created (1987) by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC, Technical University of Catalonia), under the auspices of the UNESCO. In the last fifteen year period CIMNE has promoted training and research activities and technology transfer in an international context. Although a public institution, over 90% of its funding stems from non-publics sources. CIMNE employs currently some 150 scientists and engineers from different technical fields and nationalities (over 15 different countries), working in the development and application of numerical methods (basically the finite element method) to a wide class of computational engineering problems, but lately also computational finance, insurance and food technologies.

The research activities of CIMNE cover non linear analysis and safety studies of structures, shape optimisation in structural and fluid dynamic problems, computational fluid dynamics studies for both external and internal flow problems, numerical simulation of material deformation and forming processes for the manufacturing industry. CIMNE has developed an important e-Learning platform, called the Virtual Learning Centre, devoted to teach advanced engineering topics via Internet and already used by thousand of users around the world. CIMNE takes an active part in R&D and innovation projects in different fields of engineering, in co-operation with universities, research organisations and companies world-wide. Some relevant results of this philosophy in the last fifteen years are reflected in: the organisation of more than 270 courses and seminars and 43 national and international conferences in the field of numerical methods and their applications in engineering; the publication of 58 books, 4 educational software programs, 110 monographs, 2 quarterly journals and over 597 scientific and technical report, the participation in more than 500 R+D projects with the financial support of the European Community, the Spanish Government (Ministry of Industry, CIDEM, CIRIT and CICYT), among other organisations as well as 240 Spanish and international enterprises; the support for visits to CIMNE of more than 482 prestigious international scientists the participation as shareholder in new companies aiming to the industrialisation and marketing of results from RTD projects, member of 'Xarxa de Centres de Suport a la Innovació Tecnològica'; winner of the 2002 European IST Prize, winner of the 2002 Barcelona City Prize for technological investigation. Furthermore, CIMNE is the General Secretariat of SEMNI (Spanish Association for Numerical Methods in Engineering), IACM (International Association for Computational Mechanics), ECCOMAS (European Community in Computational Methods in Applied Sciences) and of the INCCA network. CIMNE works also as a Pilot Centre of the European Research Community in Flow, Turbulence and Combustion (ERCOFTAC) For further information on CIMNE please visit http://www.cimne.upc.es/
