Giorgio Fotia is currently the Director of the Computational Methods for Engineering Department of CRS4 and a member of the board of the TCN Consortium. After graduating in Structural Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano he has been working in the industrial research and development at AERMACCHI Spa, an Italian aerospace company, where he was head of the Computational Methods and Computer Aided Design Team until 1992. He then joined CRS4 in 1992 as senior researcher in applied mathematics and simulation and became scientific responsible of the Waves and Structures Area in 1995. He acquired more than 20 years of experience in the development and application of computational methods – finite volumes, finite elements and spectral elements methods- for the solution of continuum mechanics problems, including non linear structural mechanics, flow in porous media, fluid-structure interaction, free surface flows, elastodynamics, thermo-elasticity and nonlinear mechanics of soft tissues and biological systems. Professor of numerical methods for engineering (Università di Trento, 1998), and responsible of the development of the international scientific initiatives for the TCN Consortium, he authored many papers in the development and application of computational methods to a wide range of problems in science and engineering. He has (co)organized 6 international conferences, 12 international workshops, and has been the promoter and a co-organizer of the TCN International Master in Fluid Dynamics held at CRS4 (2000-2004). During his career, he managed several national and international research projects on the development and application of numerical methods both with public institutions, including EU, and with private companies. He is currently Vice President ad Executive Council Member of SIMAI (Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics).
